Silently, with solidarity and tirelessly. This is how the more than 28,000 third sector entities that operate in Spain work to promote social rights, foster inclusion and prevent the most vulnerable groups from being excluded from decent levels of well-being. A necessary mission in a world as commodified as today's, in which values such as solidarity, altruism and empathy are not traded on the stock exchange.
In our country, high levels of inequality are one of the most pressing social problems, repeatedly exceeding the levels of most European countries. A source of social instability because it excludes the most disadvantaged groups from the prosperity generated by economic growth. Moreover, its long-term persistence, particularly when it affects children, leads to increased intergenerational transmission of poverty. And the reality is that, in our country, the at risk of poverty or social exclusion rate (AROPE), although it fell last year, stands at 26% of the population, placing Spain with the fourth-highest rate in the EU.
