Presentation of the book on Thursday, 27 April 2023

Our financial system was born in the intricate and bustling souks of the medieval cities of Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms of the north. There, a new guild, the money changers, modestly appeared, and with their unmistakable scales they managed to bring order to the countless coins which, hailing from the most diverse places, converged on the markets. No less than ten centuries have passed since those remote origins, during which time the banks and savings banks that make up the financial system have evolved in step with the vicissitudes of our history.

This book aims to contribute to our current understanding of this trajectory from a peculiar perspective, barely explored until now: its legislation. The laws that have regulated the functioning of banks and savings banks throughout their history are a primary source of knowledge for analysing the connection between the evolution of the financial system and the political and economic history of our country. The banking sector has not exactly been an isolated island disconnected from major national events. Political regime changes, economic crises and the wars that Spain has waged have constantly modified the structure of our financial institutions, moulding and reshaping them time and again, as much or more than the rest of society. Conversely, on more than several occasions, financial events have conditioned our historical evolution, as shown by the recent Global Economic Crisis.

Under these premises, Money is a veil offers an overview of the history of Spain that focuses on the role, at times decisive, played by the banking system.
