Fundación Caja de Canarias is celebrating the tenth anniversary of a programme which, with the increase in remote education, allows the city councils of the province of Las Palmas to direct their resources towards investment in technology

Covering the annual educational expenses of schoolchildren under 17 years of age is the objective of the School Aid Programme of Fundación Caja de Canarias, which complements the City Council's school grants.

On the tenth anniversary of its launch, a total of €1,080,000 has already been distributed among the 34 municipalities of the province of Las Palmas, benefiting more than 12,000 children. In the last edition, a total of €120,000 was allocated to the municipalities of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, targeting around 1,200 students between the ages of 3 and 16.

The grant money is earmarked to cover expenses related to school material, books, uniforms and computer equipment needed for the school year. In total, each student is allocated €100.

"We have been able to assist families with complicated socio-economic situations with the intention of doing our bit to help them cope with the tough back-to-school season that parents experience in September every year", states Fernando Fernández, CEO of Fundación Caja de Canarias, in the latest episode of Ideas con Valor.

Three requirements must be met in order to benefit from this assistance. Firstly, they must belong to a family unit with dependent minors who are in compulsory education and are in a situation of urgent need; secondly, they must not have sufficient financial resources to cover educational expenses; and thirdly, they need to be assessed according to the assistance criteria of the Public Administrations (IPREM), which considers the family income, the number of members of the family unit and other factors that directly affect the socio-economic situation of the family.
