World Savings Day 2021
World Savings Day is celebrated on October 31st worldwide since the 1st International Savings Congress (Milan, 1924), which was convened by the Lombard Provinces Savings Banks and brought together savings banks from around the world, including those from Spain. At the end of that event, and at the initiative of the first general director of the International Institute of Savings (now known as the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute – WSBI), this commemoration was established in honor of savings, for its contribution to development and for being considered one of the best practices that help individuals to fulfill themselves, achieve goals, and secure a dignified future.
The creation of World Savings Day enhanced the importance of promoting and educating about proper management of household finances to achieve a better standard of living. Following the establishment of CECA in 1928, its associated entities adopted the celebration of World Savings Day from that same year and established in the first statutes of the association that one of its goals would be to work “for the education of all social classes in saving, and the good employment and use of individual and collective wealth.” It has been almost a century since these statutes were written, and this work is more relevant than ever, in what we now call financial education.
