Investment in Social Work by CECA Sector Entities Reached 709 Million Euros in 2014

The Social Work financed 119,965 activities and reached more than 36 million beneficiaries.

The Social Work continues to stand out for its contribution to the improvement of societal well-being, placing CECA’s associated entities once again at the forefront of private social investment in Spain.

In 2014, the investment in Social Work reached 709.90 million euros, consolidating the stabilization that began in 2012 thanks to the efforts made by the Sector entities to maintain their social activity.

The Social Action, main area of investment

The category of Social Action continues to be the main area of investment, concentrating 50 percent of the total. Notable are the assistance programs for groups at risk of social exclusion; courses, conferences, and congresses on social themes; social websites, classrooms, and cyber-classrooms; dissemination programs; publications on social themes; and awareness activities, among others.

The area that ranked second and has experienced the greatest increase since last year was Culture and Heritage, which accounted for 20 percent of the investment. The area of Education and Research stands at 11 percent of the allocations. The areas of Environment and Local Development and Job Creation accounted for 8 and 7 percent respectively. The remaining percentage was allocated to Sports and Leisure.

This investment has financed 119,965 activities (35 percent more than in 2013), benefiting more than 36 million people (over 12 percent growth compared to the previous year).

A priority group for the Social Work is people at risk of social exclusion, into which more than one hundred million euros have been invested, benefiting one and a half million people. Likewise, 6 million elderly people have participated in various programs to which more than 45 million euros have been allocated.

Commitment to sustainability

It is worth highlighting the gradual diversification of the income sources of the Social Work. Over 33 percent of the funds generated in 2014 corresponded to own activity, marking a significant advance in recent years (5.70 percent in 2008). This shows a major reconversion of the management model of Social Works, which seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of this important work, looking for alternative income lines to traditional ones.

The entities associated with CECA, chaired by Isidro Fainé, are characterized by the so-called 3Rs that identify all members of WSBI-ESBG (World Savings and Retail Banks Institute-European Savings and Retail Banks Group): Retail, Responsible, and Rooted. That is, focused on financing families and companies; linked to the territory; and with a responsible banking model. The Social Work is one of the largest exponents of this model.
