The European Association of Savings Banks and Retail Banking discusses the new financial regulation

Under the title “Banking on better regulation for growth and Jobs”, the annual conference of the ESBG took place in Brussels

The inaugural conference was led by Isidro Fainé, as President of the European Association of Savings Banks and Retail Banking

The meeting brought together more than 150 representatives from the sector, authorities, and supervisors, who discussed the future of retail banking and its contribution to improving the real economy

The conference of the European Association of Savings Banks and Retail Banking (ESBG in English), held in Brussels, is an annual event that, on this occasion, focused on the need for good regulation for the development of banking activity. The President of CECA and ESBG, Isidro Fainé, emphasized the need for the regulator to take into account the different sizes and business models, applying “the principle of proportionality so that retail banking can continue to play its important role as a provider of financial services focused on families and SMEs.”

Several experts participated in the meeting, including European Parliament member Pervenchè Beres, a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs; Andrea Enria, Chair of the European Banking Authority; as well as various representatives from other associations of savings banks and retail banks in Europe, such as the German DSGV.

The day also addressed the adaptation of banking regulation to new technologies in the context of the progressive digitalization of the sector. In this regard, discussions took place about the “European Digitalization Strategy” and the “Green Paper on Retail Financial Services” recently promoted by the European Commission.
