The Fundación Caja de Canarias celebrates the tenth anniversary of a program that, with the increase of distance education, allows the Town Halls of the province of Las Palmas to direct their resources towards investing in technology. Covering the annual educational expenses of students under the age of 17 is the objective of the School Scholarships Program of the Fundación Caja de Canarias, which serves as a complement to the subsidies from the Town Hall for educational matters.

On the tenth anniversary of its launch, a total of 1,080,000 euros has been distributed among the 34 municipalities of the province of Las Palmas, benefiting more than 12,000 children. In the last call, the amount of 120,000 euros was allocated to the town halls of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, aimed at around 1,200 students aged between 3 and 16.

The scholarship money is used to cover expenses related to school materials, books, uniforms, and necessary computer equipment for the academic year. In total, it amounts to 100 euros per student.

“We have been able to assist families in complicated socioeconomic situations with the intention of contributing a small grain of sand to face this difficult September slope that represents going back to school each year,” states in the latest episode of Ideas con Valor, Fernando Fernández, general director of the Fundación Caja de Canarias.

The requirements to benefit from this aid are threefold. First, being part of a family unit with minors in their care who are undergoing mandatory education in process or in a situation of urgent need; second, not having sufficient economic resources to cover educational expenses; and third, being evaluated according to the criteria of Public Administrations (IPREM), which consider family income, the number of members in the family unit, and other factors that directly affect the socioeconomic situation of the family.
