Foundations dedicated €800 million in 2017 to Obra Social. A total of 115,000 initiatives that have benefited 34 million people.

Faced with the precarious situation of certain social strata and insufficient public funds to alleviate inequalities, the social welfare work undertaken by foundations is gaining increasing significance. 'This activity plays a key role and is a fundamental pillar in building a more egalitarian framework for coexistence. We have a commitment to society, especially with the most vulnerable sectors
and unprotected, complementing programmes of the public administrations that they can be reinforced or supporting others that we believe that need our assistance”, Juan Carlos López explains, Obra Social person responsible for and Relationship with the Client of CECA.

Although, in the wake of the economic crisis, the level of investment by foundations in these programmes remains well short of the €2.06 billion spent in 2008, last year was the third consecutive year with a budget increase: these organisations emerged of the former savings banks dedicated to social assistance projects, creation of employment, culture or promotion of the education and the culture more than
800 million euros, 9% more than in 2016, according to plasma the Report of Obra Social 2017 of the CECA. 'The increase in investment has been associated with an effort by the foundations to be more efficient and optimise their resources, seeking synergies, better managing their assets and developing sustainable programmes over time', stresses Juan Carlos López.
